Note: The titanium ore (Rutile, TiO2) is first converted to Titanium(IV) Chloride (TiCl4) before it is reduced by Magnesium in the Kroll Process.
Reducing agent (It donates electrons to the Titanium ions).
Acidify the solution using dilute hydrochloric acid or nitric acid. This removes any carbonate ions (CO32-) present in the solution, which would otherwise react with barium to form a white precipitate of Barium Carbonate, giving a false positive.
It is used as a Barium Meal. It is given to patients to swallow. Barium sulfate is opaque to X-rays (it absorbs them), unlike the soft tissue of the gut. This allows the structure of the digestive system to appear clearly on an X-ray image for diagnosis.
Barium sulfate is insoluble, so it is not absorbed into the bloodstream. Barium nitrate is soluble, so it would dissolve and be absorbed. Since free Barium ions (Ba2+) are toxic, using barium nitrate would poison the patient.
